What Welder to get?

September 7th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Plasma Cutter
Brian B asked:

I am looking into getting a welder and need help selecting a model. I need a very versatile welder, since I will be welding a large variety of materials and thicknesses. At the least, I need something that can weld thin metal (automobile exhaust, maybe stainless) and weld up to 1/2″ steel. I would also like to be able to weld aluminum. What would make the best welder for this type of versatility. Also, what would be a good plasma cutter? Thanks

Wow I hope you have deep pockets because what you want is very expensive not including the plasma cutter. I think Lincoln is the best name in welding and if you go to your local welding supply people they will show you a variety of machines that will do the jobs you outlined.

Your question can have many answers most of which relate to price and your welding skills. Your big names such as Lincoln,Miller, and Hobart are top of the line and come in a variety of power output, price, and metal to be welded. There are other brands that perform very well and are much cheaper in price for occasional home and lighter duty use. Century makes a very affordable and reliable welder. You can get into a 110 volt wire welder for $100.00 to $300.00 that will do a very good job on most metals either using flux core wire or solid wire with a shielding gas option. Larger output welders are difficult to weld thin metals with as smaller welders cannot weld thicker metals. You can also buy a TIG welder that will weld most anything thin or thick but they are $1000.00 and up. Plasma cutters are very nice to have and most require a compressed air source to operate unless you purchase one with on board air. I have 2 MiG welders,1 tig welder,1 arc welder, a plasma cutter, and 2 acetylene torch sets. I am covered all around to do any type of welding and cutting job but I have a lot of money invested. Not knowing your situation, I would suggest a small flux core welder and an inexpensive plasma cutter to start out. They will perform well. If you plan on doing a lot of welding you will need to invest in the higher end equipment.

For what it sounds you need a MIG will do. They don’t need to be expensive. New ones start in the $350 mark and they are available used.
